Full Job Description

This is a Direct Hire Authority (DHA) solicitation utilizing the DHA for Certain Personnel of the DoD Workforce to recruit and appoint qualified candidates to positions in the competitive service.

Who May Apply: US Citizens Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community; student; social).

You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience. There is no specific length of training or experience required.

However, you must be able to demonstrate, through experience shown in your written application materials that you possess the sufficient knowledge, skills, and abilities to successfully perform the work of this position without more than normal supervision.

Minimum Qualifications (Screen Out Element): Ability to do the work of a Boiler Plant Operator ~ without more than normal supervision to include complex duties including operating, maintaining, and repairing boilers, adjusting fuel feeds and operating electric and steam turbine pumps.

Failure to meet this Screen out Element will result in an ineligible rating. Physical Effort: The incumbent is not subject to sustained physical effort.

Occasionally, the incumbent works in awkward and cramped positions when making minor repairs. Frequent standing, walking and climbing is required while checking the equipment.

Working Conditions: The incumbent is exposed to the normal temperatures, dust gases, danger of burns from hot pipes and equipment, conditions normally occurring in power plants.

Exposed to conditions present while working near moving machinery and high voltage electrical equipment. May be exposed to acid and alkali chemicals used in feed water treatment.

Will work in confined spaces in awkward positions in dirty, greasy areas. Must be able to lift heavy objects and climb ladders. Subject to continuous noise. Major Duties:

  • Under general supervision of the foreman, operate three high pressure, oil-fired steam boilers with an active plant capacity of 580,000 lbs/hour.
  • Maintain correct temperatures on fuel oil and feed water by making necessary adjustments to feed water regulators.
  • Conduct a complete physical check of Boiler Plant equipment at least once each hour of the shift, remaining constantly alert to detect malfunctioning and take necessary action to prevent breakdown of equipment
  • Operate electric and steam turbine pumps, steam turbine forced draft fans, electric and steam driven fuel pumps and various electric condensate pumps.
  • Perform routine maintenance and repairs, such as replacing gaskets, packing and tightening up on pipe fittings and turbining boiler tubes.
  • Read all meters and records data hourly in daily operating log as to oil consumption of each boiler, steam produced, boiler make-up used, flue gas temperatures.
