Job Description

Summary

This job involves managing and assessing high-risk mental health cases for inmates in a prison setting, especially those in crisis or showing harmful behaviors, by providing immediate care and coordinating with specialists like psychiatrists.

It focuses on triaging new arrivals and emergency transfers from other facilities to stabilize their conditions and decide on further resources like civil commitment.

A good fit would be someone with a background in mental health counseling or social work who is comfortable working in a correctional environment and handling urgent, sensitive situations.

Key Requirements

  • Master’s degree in psychology, mental health counseling, applied behavior analysis, clinical social work, behavioral sciences, mental health, or a closely-related field from an accredited institution
  • Ability to manage and triage mental health crises for high-risk incarcerated individuals
  • Experience facilitating emergent psychological needs and involving psychiatry as required
  • Skills in assessing inmates for civil commitment or other stabilizing resources
  • Obtain required licensure post-hire, such as LMHC, LCSW, BCBA, or similar mental health certifications
  • Work in a correctional facility handling emergency transfers from multiple sites
  • Compliance with E-Verify and Right to Work requirements for U.S. employment eligibility

Full Job Description

Manage and Triage mental health high risk Incarcerated Individuals for specialized housing
Offenders newly coming into prison that are exhibiting concerning behavior or expressing harming thoughts must be addressed and appropriate precautions applied.
Facilitate psychological needs on an emergent level and include psychiatry as needed.
Iowa Medical and Classification Center receives emergency mental health crisis offenders from seven other Iowa Department of Corrections facilities.
Their needs are identified and assessed for possible civil commitment or other psychological resources to stabilize their mental health in order to return to their facility.

E-Verify and Right to WorkThe State of Iowa participates in E-Verify, a federal program that helps employers confirm the employment eligibility of all newly hired employees.

Within the required timeframe, new hires will be verified through the E-Verify system to ensure authorization to work in the United States.

The State of Iowa also complies with the federal Right to Work laws, which protect employees’ rights to work without being required to join a labor organization.

Qualifications

Graduation from an accredited four-year college or university with a Master’s degree in psychology, mental health counseling, applied behavior analysis, clinical social work, behavioral sciences, mental health, or a closely-related field.
