Maritime Instructor/Department Head located in Seward!

This position is in the Alaska Vocational Technical Teacher's Unit (AVTECTA).

What You Will Be Doing:
Alaska Vocational Technical Center (AVTEC), a division of the Department of Labor and Workforce Development, is recruiting for an AVTEC Instructor who will serve as an instructional subject matter expert, and the leader of the Alaska Maritime Training Center (AMTC). Responsibilities include oversight of planning, development, and delivery of training programs, and optimizing use of assessment and training technologies such as the fire trainer and full mission bridge simulator. Provides direct supervision of six full-time Instructors, several adjunct instructors, as well as a maritime advisory board, grant initiatives and special projects, and serves on the AVTEC leadership team.

Requirements

Four years of journey-level trade experience in the applicable field.

OR SUBSTITUTION:
A bachelor's degree from an accredited college in the applicable field;
AND
Two years of journey-level trade experience in the applicable field;
AND
Two years professional experience developing, coordinating, and presenting adult training or vocational education programs.

OR SUBSTITUTION:
An industry recognized professional certification in the applicable field;
AND
Two years of journey-level trade experience in the applicable field;
AND
Two years professional experience developing, coordinating, and presenting adult training or vocational education programs.

Special Note:
Positions in the AVTEC Instructor job class require expertise in a particular vocational field such as the culinary arts, business or office technology, applied technology, information technology, maritime operations or safety, medical services, construction, or the trades. The required training or experience for each position is unique to the assigned field of instruction. Recruitment and selection for these positions will be from among only those candidates who have the appropriate specialty background identified in the recruitment bulletin.

• The ability to complete a U.S. Coast Guard approved Train the Trainer course.
• The ability to work with diverse industry stakeholders including pilot organizations, vessel operators and owners, US Coast Guard, harbor and port authorities, and other training institutions.
• Management of department budget and staffing. Provides input to administration regarding the current and future funding, space, and equipment needs for the AMTC; monitor budget expenditures monthly.
• Outreach to various primary, secondary, and post-secondary educational institutions, as well as Alaskan and national maritime industry representatives to expand AVTEC's presence in the industry, and recruit new students.
• Development and management of course schedules and all space and equipment necessary for annual training schedule, simulator use, and training as demand warrants to ensure efficient staffing and use of training resources and instructional technologies.
• Management of contract training arrangements, ensuring the contract training is cohesive with scheduled programs, and facilitating use of classroom/conference room space, catering, accommodations, etc.
• Recruiting full-time faculty, adjunct faculty, and staff as needed, evaluate performance and apply coaching for performance improvement and enforce disciplinary action as warranted.
• Maintaining maritime advisory committee composed of at least two of the three members external to the institution.

Not required, but preferred: Experience with developing, drafting, editing, or submitting updates on United States Coast Guard training courses.

SALARY INFORMATION
Starting salary is dependent on qualifications and experience, State of Alaska policy, Location, and Collective Bargaining Agreement(s).
