Summary

This job is for a helper in an auto hobby shop on a military base, where you'll assist mechanics with basic car repairs, tune-ups, and inspections while also helping customers with tools and advice for their own DIY projects.

It's a flexible part-time role with no guaranteed hours, ideal for someone who enjoys hands-on work with vehicles and has some practical experience in auto maintenance.

About the position: This position is Non-appropriated Fund (NAF) and will be assigned to the 92 Force Support Squadron, Auto Hobby Shop, Fairchild AFB, WA.

The purpose of this position is to provide assistance to automotive personnel and customers, perform the simpler and more routine automotive maintenance duties and assist in the Auto Skills Center.

This is a Flexible (Intermittent) position; guaranteed 0-40 hours per week; depending on the needs of the facility. Who May Apply: Open to everyone.

Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community; student; social).

You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.

Your resume must clearly describe your relevant experience; if the position allows for qualifying based on education, your transcripts will be required as part of your application.

Qualifying Experience: Must have a working knowledge of the operation, installation of component assemblies and systems of vehicles.

Must be familiar with engine analyzers, front end alignment machine, hand tools, automotive test equipment and brake turning equipment. Must be able to read and interpret repair manuals.

Physical Effort: Lifting, handling and carrying supplies, materials, and equipment weighing up to 45 pounds. Heavier items are moved with equipment of the assistance of other workers.

Required to stand on hard surfaces for extended periods of time. Bends, stoops, and works in tiring and uncomfortable positions.

Working Conditions: Usually works shop area (indoors) where it is drafty, noisy and fumes from vehicles are present.

Exposure to dirt, dust, petroleum products, battery acid and many other hazardous substances which may cause burns or skin irritation. There is potential for cuts, bruise, shocks, burns and strains.

Requires caution in working with moving parts during operation of equipment. Major Duties:

Assists with the maintenance and repair of automotive engines, parts and accessories.

Provides assistance with tune-ups, troubleshooting and inspection of various types of vehicles, their components and systems.

Operates automatic tires change, electronic spin balancer, power brake bleeder, and various standard engine tune-up and troubleshooting tools and equipment.

Assists with issuing, receiving, storing and accounting for various types of automotive parts and equipment for resale to customers.

Offers patrons advise, consultation, quotes, appointments and inspections as required. As needed, issues, receives and schedules use of equipment, tools and repair/paint stalls for DIY patrons.

Uses chit or others parts assignment system for accountability of assigned tools. Determines type of repair job involved and suggests a variety of tools needed to accomplish the repair.

Provides instructions to customers on cleaning processes, soiled rag disposal, sweeping and cleanup of repair or pit stall and removal of excess automotive parts.

Ensures tools turned-in are clean, assesses breakage or damage if any; charging customer for tools according to prescribed price listing.

Assists in end-of-month inventories of stock by counting items in storage areas. Ensures that supplies and equipment are safeguarded and secure at all times.

Observes and performance fire, safety practices and good housekeeping practices. Properly secures the facility, accounts for tools, equipment. Operates a cash register.

As needed, completes necessary documentation for cash funds accountability. May operate a government vehicle to perform duties such as, vehicle lock outs, jump starts, road side assistance, etc.
