Job Description

Summary

This job involves training drivers for the city's garbage collection trucks, teaching them how to safely pick up trash, recycling, and organic waste while operating and maintaining the vehicles.

Full Job Description

Under general supervision, is responsible for performing skilled and lead work training drivers on all types of refuse collection trucks. Trains employees to provide collection service to the residents on the assigned route, including safely and efficiently collecting garbage, organics, and recycling materials. Instructs employees on procedures to transport collected materials to appropriate City disposal or processing facilities and the proper way to operate, maintain, and care for equipment. Exercises functional supervision over assigned work crew.

Requirements

  • Trains and prepares vehicle for daily assignment by performing pre-,during, and post-trip inspections and prepares any necessary reports to include any vehicle malfunctions, which involves frequently lifting and carrying equipment weighing 40 pounds.
  • Maintains personal protective equipment and prepares safety equipment to be used during the workday.
  • Operates an automated refuse collection vehicle to conduct new driver training.
  • Conducts remedial training for all drivers involved in motor vehicle accidents or property damage.
  • Conducts annual in-cab evaluations of all collection truck drivers.
  • Conducts specialized training as directed by department leadership.
  • Conducts route observations in accordance with departmental checklists.
  • Provides staff driving evaluations.
  • Provides direction on safety procedures and use of shortest route to landfill, brush site, or transfer station.
  • Educates residents and staff on collection procedures and delivers literature on acceptable and non-acceptable materials.
  • Assists in coaching sessions for drivers identified by in-cab camera systems.
  • Assists in the development of safety-based driver's training curriculum and checklists.
  • Assists in conducting time and motion studies for various collection districts.
  • Assists in departmental presentations and public educational events.
  • Performs environmental inspection of roll-out cart contents as directed by policy.
  • Performs other related duties and fulfills responsibilities as required.

Qualifications

  • Formal or informal education or training which ensures the ability to read and write at a level necessary for successful job performance.
  • Three (3) years of commercial truck driving experience.
  • No preventable accidents within the last twelve (12) months.
  • Valid Texas Commercial "B" Driver's License (CDL).
  • Must obtain a Class "A" License (CDL) within six months of selection to position.
Applicant Information

Unless otherwise stated, applicants are permitted to substitute two years of related full-time experience for one year of higher education or one year of related higher education for two years of experience in order to meet the minimum requirements of the job.

One year of full-time experience is defined as 30 or more hours worked per week for 12 months.

One year of higher education is defined as 30 credit hours completed at an accredited college or university.

    • Extensive knowledge of the operation of commercial vehicles in accordance with all safety rules, traffic laws, and driving in all weather conditions.
    • Knowledge of regulations related to traffic safety practices, safety procedures, safety rules, and traffic laws.

    • Knowledge of vehicle maintenance and ability to troubleshoot vehicle malfunctions.
    • Knowledge of facilities and procedures for operating on the premises of a disposal or processing facility.
    • Knowledge of equipment inspection procedures and maintenance requirements.
    • Knowledge of on-board video systems, such as backing cameras and in-cab cameras.
    • Ability to establish and maintain a cooperative working relationship with co-workers, supervisors, and the general public.
    • Ability to perform effective customer service including direct communication with the customer.
    • Ability to coach drivers as necessary to make them a "safer driver".
    • Ability to conduct initial and recurring training for drivers.
    • Ability to conduct vehicle inspections and trouble-shoot equipment problems.
    • Ability to understand and follow instructions.
    • Ability to learn City Administrative Directives and Department policies required in the performance of duties; and teach those same policies to new employees.
    • Ability to work in conditions that are primarily outside and subject to inclement weather conditions, to include frequent exposure to temperature extremes, dust, damp/wet surfaces, and high noise level.
    • Ability to perform all the essential functions of the position with or without accommodations.
