Job Description

Summary

This job involves leading a team of workers who fix and maintain vehicles like cars, trucks, and construction equipment for the City of Detroit.

Key Requirements

Full Job Description

GENERAL SERVICES DEPARTMENT
AUTO REPAIR FOREMAN

Under general supervision, supervises a moderate sized group of repair workers and others in the maintenance or repair of automotive and other related equipment.

Requirements

  • Supervise the work of a moderate sized group of repair workers, helpers, and others engaged in the servicing, maintenance, and repair of automotive and other gasoline-operated equipment including trucks, passenger vehicles, and other construction equipment. 
  • Assign work and provide instructions relative to work orders and repair work.
  • Inspect repair work in process and upon completion.
  • Assign subordinates to maintain and repair units and parts in pumps involving tasks such as tightening pump rods, re-facing pump seats, fitting keys in pump impellers, grinding valves, and checking bearing adjustments in pump barrel.
  • Ensure that required parts are available.
  • Review records prepared by subordinates.
  • Prepare requisitions for supplies, materials, and parts.
  • Maintain records such as employee schedules, lubrication of automotive equipment, and duties performed and generates reports thereon.
  • Perform tests on equipment before and after repairing to determine operating condition.

Qualifications

Qualifications (Required)
  • High School graduation or GED with successful completion of coursework in shop and auto repair work.
  • Minimum of four (4) years of experience in assembling, repairing, and maintaining light duty, heavy duty, or other automotive equipment.
Qualifications (Preferred)
  • Two (2) years of experience in a supervisory capacity.

Equivalency

  • Equivalent combinations of education and experience that provide the required knowledge, skills, and abilities will be evaluated on an individual basis.

Licensing and Certifications

Valid State of Michigan Operator License required at the time of application.

Individuals subsequently certified or promoted to this classification shall be required to obtain a State of Michigan Chauffeur’s License with a Class 1 or 2 endorsement, or a Commercial Driver License with a Group A endorsement and Air Brake Qualification.

In addition, P endorsement required for placement at the Department of Transportation.

  • Successful applicants must meet physical standards prescribed by the Michigan State Police Motor Carrier Division and must possess and carry a valid current Medical Examiner’s Certificate certifying physical fitness for driving in accordance with State of Michigan Motor Carrier Safety Act – 1988.

    • Knowledge of methods of maintaining and repairing automotive equipment.
    • Knowledge of planning and laying out work of a small group of automotive repair workers.
    • Knowledge of preparing reports and maintaining records of automotive maintenance.
    • Knowledge of Michigan Occupational Safety and Health Administration (MIOSHA) and departmental work safety standards.
    • Skill in planning and organizing work.
    • Skill in physical and mechanical dexterity.
    • Skill in observation, visual, and audio acuity.
    • Skill in planning, leading, and supervising the work of others engaged in automotive maintenance and repair.
    • Ability to enforce work safety procedures in accordance with MIOSHA and departmental standards.
    • Ability to tactfully interact with subordinates and other departmental personnel
    • Ability to identify mechanical trouble.
    • Ability to resourcefully handle repair problems involved in the maintenance of light duty, heavy duty, and other automotive equipment.

    Physical Demand
    • The employee generally remains in a stationary position for an extended period of time operating standard office equipment which may include computers, telephones, photocopiers, and fax machines.
    • The employee is expected to move about to accomplish tasks such as opening file cabinets and moving files.
    • Must be able to lift, push, pull, and carry up to 50 pounds.
    Work Environment
    • Work is performed primarily in an office environment. Some work requires travel to meetings, conferences, and other work sites with exposure to seasonal weather conditions.
