Summary

This role involves leading and supervising a team of lawyers handling lawsuits and legal disputes for St.

Louis County, including advising staff, managing communications with clients and outsiders, and sometimes taking charge of court cases.

It's a senior position focused on guiding litigation efforts in state and federal courts as well as administrative hearings.

Key Requirements

St. Louis County Counselor's office seeks an Attorney IV to join their team.

This position is for the co-manager and co-supervisor of litigation to include pending and anticipated court and administrative tribunal matters in the County Counselor’s Office.

The duties associated with this position may change as the needs of the office changes - such duties will be contained within the general Attorney IV job classification.

Supervising an area of specialization distinguishes this job class from P914-Attorney III.

Requirements

As the Attorney IV in the County Counselor's Office, you will:

  • Provide advice, guidance and document review to subordinate attorneys and non-attorney staff in the County Counselor’s office related to pending litigation (state and federal court and administrative tribunals) and pre-suit matters.
  • Co-manage client and third-party communications regarding pre-suit, litigation, and third-party matters.
  • Review work of outside counsel when such counsel is retained for litigation matters.
  • Submit work for review and makes recommendations to the Deputy County Counselor and County Counselor in litigation and pre-suit matters.
  • May also be responsible for handling litigation cases as the attorney of record.
  • Perform related work as required.
Supervisory Responsibilities

Full Supervisor: 1) supervise and coordinate activities of subordinates, 2) assign and review subordinates' work, 3) make recommendations to the Deputy County Counselor and County Counselor and 4) prepare and sign performance appraisals as an initial reviewer.


Qualifications

  • Requires a Juris Doctorate degree from an American law school accredited by the American Bar Association
  • Current licensure as an attorney by the Missouri Bar Association
  • At least seven years of professional work experience.
  • Preference may be given to applicants with the following:
    • Litigation management
    • Jury trial experience

Additional Information

SELECTION AND APPOINTMENT: A selection committee will evaluate the qualifications of each applicant which will include recentness and appropriateness of the applicant's education and experience, answers to the supplemental questions, results of employment references investigated and any other appropriate information available.

The selection committee will admit to the interview only those persons who possess the most job-related qualifications and may establish admittance criteria beyond the minimum qualifications stated above. The interview will comprise 100% of the applicant's earned grade. A candidate must earn a qualifying grade of 70 or more on the interview to be eligible for appointment. After initial interviews with the selected candidates are conducted, an email will be sent to the address on file with instructions on how to complete and submit a Conviction Questionnaire. Candidates have 3 days to complete the required questionnaire.

The five top ranking candidates, based on the final grade, will be certified to the Department Director/Appointing Authority who will make the final decision.

All applicants conditionally offered a merit position will be required to submit to urinalysis to screen for illegal drug use prior to appointment. Screening will be performed by a reputable clinical laboratory. The cost of screening will be covered by the County.
