Base salary range: $147,649 - $221,900

Note: Actual salary includes locality pay (15-40%+ depending on location).
This job involves leading teams of engineers and staff to study traffic patterns, review plans for roads and signals, and manage projects that improve how people and vehicles move around the city.
It also includes working with other groups to create community transportation plans and presenting findings to the public or officials.
A good fit would be someone with hands-on experience in traffic analysis and planning who enjoys solving real-world mobility challenges in a busy urban setting.
Associate Engineer - Traffic positions assign, review, and evaluate the performance of Assistant Engineers and support staff; interpret traffic engineering data; conduct and review complex traffic studies; review engineering plans; develop the transportation circulation/mobility element of community plans; coordinate with other departments, agencies, contractors, and citizen groups; prepare and present technical reports to other agencies, community groups, or other groups; manage traffic improvement projects through design and construction; and perform other duties as assigned.
NOTES:
Associate Engineer - Traffic employees who do not have a valid State of California Professional Engineer registration but have a valid Engineer-in-Training (EIT) certification that meets the requirements established by California’s Department of Consumer Affairs, Board for Professional Engineers, Land Surveyors, and Geologists are eligible for 4% additional pay.
The employee’s eligibility for EIT certification pay will end when he or she achieves state registration.

EXPERIENCE: Three years of full-time professional traffic engineer or transportation planning experience which MUST include one year of full-time professional journey-level experience at a level equivalent to an Assistant Engineer - Traffic with the City of San Diego (a position that produces travel forecasts, performs traffic accident analyses, field surveys, and studies of statistical data; recommends changes to striping, pavement markings, signage, and parking to facilitate safe and efficient traffic flow; and reviews traffic signal and traffic control plans).
Qualifying professional experience MUST include at least ONE of the following options:

City of San Diego employees using Out-of-Class Assignment (OCA) experience to qualify must submit written documentation signed by their appointing authority or payroll specialist, detailing the work performed, dates, and total number of qualifying OCA hours.
OCA experience without the required documentation will NOT be considered.
LICENSE: A valid California Class C Driver License may be required at the time of hire.

Fingerprints will be submitted to the Federal Bureau of Investigation and the California Department of Justice for a conviction record report.
Certain positions may require additional screening processes, including a polygraph examination and/or background investigation.
All screening processes must be successfully completed before employment begins.
