Full Job Description

The Department of Justice represents the United States in legal disputes, prosecutes federal crimes, and upholds the rule of law.

Our mission is to safeguard communities from criminal threats, including violent crime, illicit drug trafficking, illegal immigration, child sexual exploitation, fraud, sex trafficking, and national security violations.

The District of the Virgin Islands has a main office in St. Thomas and a satellite office in St. Croix. Required Qualifications: Applicants must possess a J.D.

Degree, be an active member of the bar (any U.S. jurisdiction), and have at least 3-years post-J.D. legal or other relevant experience. United States citizenship is required.

Preferred Qualifications: Strong academic credentials, superior legal research and writing skills, quick analytical ability to accurately and precisely articulate critical case-related issues, courtroom experience, good interpersonal skills, the ability to work in a supportive and professional team environment with client agencies, support staff and other attorneys, and a demonstrated commitment to public service.

The ideal candidate will have three or more years of post-J.D. experience litigating cases with substantial responsibility for all aspects of discovery and trial.

You must meet all qualification requirements upon the closing date of this announcement. Major Duties:

Assistant United States Attorneys (AUSAs) located in the Criminal Division of our office are responsible for prosecuting a variety of violations of federal and territorial laws such as immigration, drugs, firearms, public corruption, white collar crime, and violent crime.

Responsibilities will increase and assignments will become more complex as your training and experience progress. Two Positions will be located in St.

Croix, VI and three positions will be located in St. Thomas, VI. Security Requirements: Initial appointment is conditioned upon a satisfactory preemployment adjudication.

This includes fingerprint, credit and tax checks, and drug testing. In addition, continued employment is subject to a favorable adjudication of a background investigation.

Residency Requirements: Assistant United States Attorneys generally must reside in the district to which he or she is appointed or within 25 miles thereof. See 28 U.S.C.

545 for district-specific information.
