Summary

This job is for an Assistant United States Attorney focused on appellate work in the Criminal Division, where you'll research and write legal briefs, argue cases in appeals courts, handle special court matters like habeas corpus, and support other lawyers with research and preparation.

Degree, be an active member of the bar (any U.S. jurisdiction). United States citizenship is required. Preferred Qualifications: Preferred qualifications include felony jury trial experience.

Applicants must also demonstrate superior analytical ability; have strong research, writing, and courtroom skills; independently exercise fair and sound judgment; follow all Department of Justice and United States Attorney's Office policies; exhibit the ability to work in a supportive and professional manner with other attorneys, support staff, and law enforcement agencies; interact professionally and effectively with opposing counsel; handle matters in court persuasively and justly on behalf of the United States of America; and be devoted to excellence.

The United States Attorney's Office for the Middle District of Alabama is currently seeking a highly qualified Assistant United States Attorney (AUSA) candidate to serve as an Appellate AUSA in the Office's Criminal Division.

This Assistant U.S.

Attorney will be responsible for researching and drafting briefs and motions for filing in the Court of Appeals, orally arguing cases in front of the appellate court, handling habeas corpus matters and other special projects (e.g., compassionate release matters) in district courts, participating in moot courts to prepare other AUSAs for oral argument, and providing research, brief review/edits, and general legal support for AUSAs in the Criminal and Civil Divisions.

Briefs will involve a wide variety of constitutional, statutory, and other claims arising under substantive and procedural federal criminal and civil law that will include responding to defense appeals and filing affirmative appeals challenging district court decisions or orders.

The selected applicant will also have the opportunity to perform an important public service by representing the interests of the United States of America in criminal actions brought by the United States.

Responsibilities will increase and assignments will become more complex as your training and experience progress.
