Full Job Description

This announcement is for a TERM Position Not to Exceed 4 Years. You will serve as an ASSISTANT PROFESSOR in the N1/Personnel, Manpower, and Training Department of US NAVAL COMMUNITY COLLEGE.

Mastery of subject matter: Demonstrated command of the Government, law, executive branch defense policy, research and citation, critical thinking, and argumentation/use of evidence.

Secondary fields of interest: familiarity with US public policy, ethics and leadership, national security policy, naval or military studies, US military/naval history, English and composition, or international affairs.

Terminal degree in Organizational Leadership, Operational Analysis, National Security, History (with relevant research or study), or a related field.

Advanced Warfighting degrees (SAMS, SAASS, SAW, JAWS, etc) are beneficial, but not mandatory.

Knowledge of educational methods most appropriate for introductory collegiate instruction for experienced enlisted personnel and designated professionals, and relevant skill and experience in planning, developing, and teaching courses in national security affairs.

Experience offering courses online, with strong preference for skills in asynchronous instruction. Knowledge of assessment of student learning, and of accreditation requirements connected to teaching.

College (preferably online, asynchronous) teaching experience is preferred.

GS-13: PROFESSOR In addition to the Basic Requirements for this position, your resume must also demonstrate at least one year of specialized experience at or equivalent to the GS-12 grade level or pay band in the Federal service or equivalent experience in the private or public sector.

Specialized experience must demonstrate the following: 1) Preparing and recording online lectures and managing asynchronous online instruction; 2) Working with an instructional design team, building course modules and revising based on assessment and evaluation data, and ensuring all materials are up to date; 3) Applying educational methods most appropriate for introductory collegiate instruction for experienced enlisted personnel and designated professionals; 4) Administering courses online, with strong preference for skills in asynchronous instruction relevant in planning, developing, and teaching courses in national security affairs; 5) Evaluating assessments of student learning, and of accreditation requirements connected to teaching, (specifically online college, asynchronous); and 6) Conducting independent research and analysis in fields of expertise, including working knowledge of research methods and procedures, analysis, and superior writing and briefing skills.

GS-12: ASSISTANT PROFESSOR In addition to the Basic Requirements for this position, your resume must also demonstrate at least one year of specialized experience at or equivalent to the GS-11 grade level or pay band in the Federal service or equivalent experience in the private or public sector.

Specialized experience must demonstrate the following: 1) Delivering online lectures and managing asynchronous online instruction; 2) Assisting an instructional design team to update course modules based on assessment and evaluation data, and ensuring all materials are up to date; 3) Using instructional methods appropriate for introductory collegiate instruction for experienced enlisted personnel and designated professionals; 4) Administering courses online, with strong preference for skills in asynchronous instruction relevant in planning, developing, and teaching courses in national security affairs; 5) Evaluating assessments of student learning, and of accreditation requirements connected to teaching, (specifically online college, asynchronous); and 6) Conducting research and analysis under the guidance of senior faculty.

  • You will prepare and teach online lectures and manage asynchronous online instruction to support USNCC’s Naval Core curriculum, in the field of Naval Force Design and related subjects.
  • You will be responsible for teaching up to 12 courses per year: Typical course load of 1-2 courses per term, for 4 in each semester (two sessions each), and one in the summer.
  • You will build and revise course modules based on assessment and evaluation data, and ensures all materials are up to date.
  • You will manage a major segment of the core curriculum to include planning course; developing course syllabi, readings, other instructional materials and provide quality assurance of adjunct faculty.
  • You will Serve as faculty advisor to students in academic program decisions, in selection of topics for individual and group research, in research methods, and the preparation of papers and oral presentations.
  • You will conduct research into topics related to naval studies and publish in peer reviewed journals, books, chapters, and newspaper articles and conference papers.
