Career Opportunity

The city of Las Vegas is accepting applications for Aquatics Leader. This position is responsible for the overall operation of assigned swimming pool facilities throughout the city; coordinates location staffing; identifies facilities maintenance needs; contacts appropriate maintenance staff as needed; develops aquatics programs.

Examination Process

A civil service examination will be conducted in accordance with the Civil Service Rules of the city of Las Vegas. The supplemental questions are the examination.

Falsification of information may result in disqualification from a recruitment or removal from a city position. Additional information will not be accepted after the closing date.

The supplemental questions are weighted 100% for placement on an eligible list, and must be worked on individually by the applicant only.

The supplemental questions of all qualified applicants will be reviewed for placement on an eligible list.

The eligible list will remain in effect for a period of 6 months from the date of certification and may be extended for a period of up to 2 years.

Eligible List

You must score 70% or higher on the examination to be placed on the eligible list.

Selection Process

Final candidate selection will include list placement and may include hiring interview (if applicable).

Any individual offered employment will be required to pass a pre-employment drug test, complete background check, and may be required to demonstrate the ability to perform the physical requirements of the job.

Some positions may require preliminary background checks.

The purpose of this recruitment is to establish an eligible list for current and/ or future openings which may include part-time or full-time positions.


Requirements

Overview
Responsible for the day-to-day operation of assigned swimming pool facilities throughout the city; coordinates location staffing; identifies facilities maintenance needs; contacts appropriate maintenance staff as needed; provides aquatics programming.


Supervision Received and Exercised

Receives general supervision from Aquatics Coordinator or higher level staff.


Essential Functions:

  1. When overseeing hourly workers, ensures employees adhere to established work methods, techniques and schedules, and comply with applicable city and department policies, procedures, standards and specifications; reviews needs with appropriate management staff; allocates resources accordingly.
  2. Coordinates hourly aquatics staff; schedules coverage and rotations.
  3. Plans, schedules and monitors swim classes, meets and other activities and special events; evaluates instructional programs from a cost-benefit perspective.
  4. Provides instructor certification training to qualified aquatics staff; occasionally instructs First Aid, CPR, and AED classes as needed.
  5. Performs lifeguarding and rescue techniques on stand as needed to ensure proper ratios are maintained.
  6. Monitors and gathers information from various sources to identify needs and trends for new programs; drafts program outlines which include the target participant group, description of the activity, estimate of staffing and equipment needs and any other costs, potential risks and plans to minimize them; evaluates pricing based on industry and regional competition and/or standards; submits plan to management for approval and upon approval, proceeds with implementation.
  7. Participates in front desk operations, including answering telephones, registering participants, selling passes, collecting fees, preparing cash deposit and report, providing information, entering and updating class and program information in the recreational software or other data-driven software system, entering attendance and responding to complaints.
  8. Coordinates aquatics facility rentals for private events including collecting payments, scheduling staff and setting up safety and recreation equipment.
  9. Teaches lifeguard CPR, first aid and instructor-level certification classes.
  10. Visits pool sites to ensure appropriate levels of safety, cleanliness and service; provides corrective instruction to city staff as necessary.
  11. Enforces facility, department and city rules and regulations.
  12. Assists in preparing promotional materials and displays.
  13. Maintains inventory of equipment. Participates in the procurement process, including researching materials and equipment.
  14. Participates in recruiting and training seasonal staff.
  15. Administers first aid and conducts pool rescues when needed.
  16. Assists in preparing pool safety audits and emergency action plans.
  17. Prepares a variety of paperwork and reports.

Marginal Functions

  1. Maintains a variety of automated and manual logs, records and files; performs a variety of record keeping, filing, indexing and other general clerical work.
  2. Enters aquatics classes into the computer system; updates class information as necessary.
  3. Performs safety and health related cleaning and maintenance services as needed in facilities.
  4. Performs related duties and responsibilities as required.
  5. Opens and closes facility; sets up and takes down equipment and supplies needed for scheduled activities; ensures that safety equipment is in good working order and easily accessible.

Qualifications

Experience/Training

  1. Associate's or higher degree in a related field, OR
  2. Equivalent to graduation from high school and two (2) years (full-time) of experience working in aquatics or parks & recreation including internships, work study or volunteer; OR
  3. Equivalent to graduation from high school and three (3) years (full-time) of customer service experience that involved regular public contact, clerical work, cashiering or aquatics experience.

    * In the above criteria, related field may include, but not limited to, general education, sociology, geriatrics, psychology, parks & recreation, leisure studies, sports management, kinesiology, business management, and public administration.

    License or Certificate

    Possession of an appropriate, valid driver's license on the date of application, and maintenance thereafter.

    Possession of a Lifeguard/First Aid/CPR/AED certificate issued by the American Red Cross or equivalent on the date of application, with ongoing maintenance thereafter.

    Possession of a Lifeguarding Instructor certificate issued by the American Red Cross or equivalent within 90 days from the date of hire, and ongoing maintenance thereafter.

    Possession of a Water Safety Instructor certificate issued by the American Red Cross or equivalent within 90 days from the date of hire, and ongoing maintenance thereafter.
