Job Description

Summary

This job involves serving as an expert advisor on water quality monitoring for Michigan's Great Lakes, including Erie, Huron, and Superior, by assessing pollution impacts on aquatic life and providing technical support for environmental programs.

A good fit would be someone with a strong science background in water-related fields and several years of hands-on experience in aquatic biology or pollution assessment, who enjoys fieldwork and problem-solving in environmental protection.

The role is based in Lansing with potential for hybrid remote work within Michigan.

Key Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in natural or physical sciences with at least 24 semester credits in aquatic biology, aquatic entomology, environmental science, environmental toxicology, fisheries biology, hydrology, limnology, statistics, water science, or wetland ecology
  • Four years of professional experience in assessing pollution effects on aquatic life equivalent to an Aquatic Biologist
  • Two years of experience equivalent to an Aquatic Biologist P11, or one year equivalent to an Aquatic Biologist 12
  • Ability to provide expert technical advice on complex water quality monitoring issues
  • Serve as primary contact for EGLE's Strategic Environmental Quality Monitoring Program for surface waters

This position serves as the Water Resources Division (WRD) staff specialist in the implementation of the Department of Environment, Great Lakes, and Energy's (EGLE) "Strategic Environmental Quality Monitoring Program for Michigan's Surface Waters" by providing expert technical advise on a variety of complex issues. This position also serves as EGLE's primary contact on water quality monitoring issues by providing expert technical support for a number of complex monitoring activities.

Education Possession of a bachelor's degree in the natural or physical sciences with at least 24 semester (36 term) credits in one or a combination of the following: aquatic biology, aquatic entomology, environmental science, environmental toxicology, fisheries biology, hydrology, limnology, statistics, water science or wetland ecology.

ExperienceFour years of professional experience in assessing the effects of pollution or aquatic life equivalent to an Aquatic Biologist, including two years equivalent to an Aquatic Biologist P11 or one year equivalent to an Aquatic Biologist 12.
