Job Description

Summary

This role involves leading safety, security, and emergency response programs for Alaska's ferry system, ensuring all operations meet international and national standards.

The person will conduct audits, track issues, and act as a key expert and contact for leadership during emergencies.

It's ideal for someone with strong experience in maritime compliance who is comfortable with travel and being available around the clock.

Key Requirements

  • Extensive knowledge of International Safety Management (ISM) Code, Maritime Labor Convention (MLC), and ISO 9001 Quality Management
  • Familiarity with U.S. Coast Guard requirements, International Maritime Organization (IMO) guidance, SOLAS, STCW, and American Bureau of Shipping (ABS) standards

Anchorage or Ketchikan: $3028.50 / Biweekly
Juneau: $3180.00 / Biweekly

What you will be doing:The AMHS Safety Management Program Coordinator 2 independently organizes, directs, and coordinates system-wide safety, security, and emergency response compliance programs for the Alaska Marine Highway System (AMHS).

This position serves as the department’s primary Subject Matter Expert for the International Safety Management (ISM) Code, Maritime Labor Convention (MLC), ISO 9001 Quality Management, maritime security, and emergency response regulations impacting AMHS vessels, terminals, and shoreside operations, with comprehensive knowledge of U.S.

Coast Guard requirements, International Maritime Organization (IMO) guidance, SOLAS, STCW, American Bureau of Shipping (ABS) standards, and principles of continual improvement.

This position leads audits, inspections, and compliance reviews; identifies and tracks non-conformities and corrective actions; maintains AMHS safety and security management systems; and serves as the Designated Person Ashore (DPA) to ensure effective communication between vessel, terminal, and executive leadership.

This position requires extensive travel and 24-hour on-call availability to support audits, investigations, exercises, and emergency response activities.
