Job Description

Summary

This job is for a nurse practitioner who acts as a primary care provider in a military health center, handling patient assessments, diagnoses, treatments, and education in both hospital and clinic settings.

It involves working with teams to manage patient care and requires strong clinical skills in a fast-paced environment.

A good fit would be an experienced registered nurse with advanced training who enjoys direct patient interaction and has a commitment to serving in a Department of Defense facility.

  • Graduate or higher degree from an accredited advanced practice nursing program
  • Current, active, full, and unrestricted professional nursing license from a U.S. state or territory
  • Current, active, full, and unrestricted advanced practice nursing license in a relevant specialty

  • At least one full year of professional nursing experience including physical exams, prescribing medications, and patient/staff education

About the Position: This position falls under Defense Health Agency at Army Health Center McDonald, Directorate of Medicine and requires one or more full years of professional nursing experience which includes performing physical examinations, prescribing medications, and educating patients or staff.

This is a Direct Hire Solicitation Who May Apply: US Citizens In order to qualify, you must meet the education and experience requirements described below.

Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community; student; social).

You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.

Your resume must clearly describe your relevant experience; if qualifying based on education, your transcripts will be required as part of your application.

Basic Requirement for Advance Practice Nurse (Nurse Practitioner): Degree: A graduate or higher level degree from an accredited professional nursing educational program in Advance Practice is required.

This education must have been accredited by the Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education, Council on Accreditation of Nurse Anesthesia Educational Programs, Accreditation Commission for Midwifery Education, or an accrediting body recognized by the U.S.

Department of Education at the time the degree was obtained. (Note: You must attach a copy of your transcripts.).

Foreign Degree: Graduates of foreign nursing schools must have completed the Commission on Graduates of Foreign Nursing Schools Certification Program.

The certification program consists of a credentials evaluation, the CGFNS Qualifying Exam, and evidence of passing one of the approved English Language Proficiency examinations.

A copy of the CGFNS Certificate is required.

Licensure: A current, active, full, and unrestricted license or registration as a professional nurse from a State, the District of Columbia, the Commonwealth of Puerto Rico, or a territory of the United States; and you must have passed the National Council Licensure Examination.

AND Licensure: A current, active, full, and unrestricted license or registration as a professional nurse in the specialty of Advance Practice or related specialty from a State, the District of Columbia, the Commonwealth of Puerto Rico, or a territory of the United States.

In addition to meeting the basic requirement above, to qualify for this position you must also meet the qualification requirements listed below: Professional Nursing Experience: One or more full years of professional nursing experience which includes performing physical examinations, prescribing medications, and educating patients or staff.

This definition of professional nursing experience is typical of work performed at the next lower grade/level position in the federal service (GS-11).

Some federal jobs allow you to substitute your education for the required experience in order to qualify.

For this job, you must meet the qualification requirement using experience alone--no substitution of education for experience is permitted. Major Duties:

  • As primary care provider, incumbent conducts and directs collaborative care assessment, diagnosis and management of patients in both inpatient and outpatient settings.
  • Obtains and records a problem-oriented health history; performs a systematic physical examination and interprets abnormal and normal findings to form a diagnosis regarding physical, emotional, or social disabilities.
  • Participates in patient care rounds and conferences, presenting patient cases/topics and communicating patient management strategies to members of the patient care team.
  • Educates patients and their families regarding healthcare processes and diagnostic tests; therapeutic regimen, including medication, diet, follow-up care; and methods of adapting medication and treatment to current lifestyles.
  • Consults and collaborates with physicians regarding patient management, to include evaluating and revising therapeutic plans and managing high-risk, unstable, or extremely complex patients.
  • Analyzes epidemiological, biostatistical, environmental, and other appropriate scientific data, related to individual, aggregate, and population health.
  • Performs primary reviews and gathers information and participates in secondary and tertiary reviews.
  • Engages with emergency department, operating rooms, wards, radiology, pharmacy, lab, medical records, and patient administration to collect information and provide education focused on the optimization of trauma care.
  • Serves as a preceptor to graduate students enrolled in nurse practitioner and physician assistant programs, medical students and to newly assigned nurse practitioners.
  • Coordinates and conducts in-service education programs for health care professionals and serves as an advisor/member of assigned committees.
