Job Description

Summary

This job is for a nurse midwife who provides specialized care to women during pregnancy, childbirth, and the postpartum period, as well as initial care for newborns, in a military medical center.

It involves managing labor and deliveries, performing exams, and handling emergencies in inpatient or outpatient settings.

A good fit would be an experienced registered nurse with midwifery expertise who thrives in a fast-paced, team-oriented military environment and has a passion for women's and infant health.

Key Requirements

  • Graduate or higher-level degree in nursing with a specialization in midwifery from an accredited program
  • Passed the National Council Licensure Examination (NCLEX)
  • Current, active, full, and unrestricted license as a professional nurse from a U.S. state or territory
  • Licensed or registered in the clinical specialty of midwifery by a U.S. state or territory
  • At least one year of professional nursing experience in inpatient obstetrical care, including labor management, vaginal delivery, local/pudendal anesthesia, and emergency procedures

About the Position: This position is located in an inpatient clinic, outpatient clinic, or other setting associated with the Medical Treatment Facility (MTF).

This position is located at Womack Army Medical Center in Fort Bragg, North Carolina.

Basic Requirements Degree: For Advanced Practice Nurse (APN) positions, applicants must possess a graduate or higher-level degree in nursing from an accredited educational program in the area of expertise or specialty indicated by the position.

Specialized Professional Nursing Experience: One or more full years of professional nursing experience which includes providing inpatient obstetrical care including labor management and vaginal delivery, performing local and pudendal anesthesia, and initiating and conducting emergency lifesaving procedures.

This definition of professional nursing experience is typical of work performed at the next lower grade/level position in the federal service (GS-11 or above).

Note: Employees currently assigned to positions in this occupational series as of September 2017 will be considered to have met the basic requirements for the position occupied.

Some federal jobs allow you to substitute your education for the required experience in order to qualify.

For this job, you must meet the qualification requirement using experience alone--no substitution of education for experience is permitted. Major Duties:

  • Manage care of normal newborn including nutrition, elimination, and activity.
  • Evaluates and manages the normal postpartum period.
  • Perform accurate history and physical examination on obstetric, gynecologic, and neonatal patients.
  • Perform and/or requests laboratory, radiologic and other diagnostic and screening tests.
  • Initiate appropriate nursing intervention/medical consultation.
  • Provide immediate newborn care, initial physical assessment of the newborn upon delivery, evaluation, and resuscitation as needed.
