Summary

This job involves handling the cleaning, sterilizing, and preparing of medical supplies and instruments for use in hospitals, working mostly on your own in a busy VA medical center.

Full Job Description

The Advanced Level Medical Supply Technician in the Sterile Processing Service (Sterile Processing Technician) is expected to perform the full scope of sterilization duties and responsibilities with minimal supervision and direction.

The incumbent at this level is expected to work independently to provide sterilization, preparation, supply items and decontamination support for the medical center.

In addition, the incumbent has at least three years of MST experience and advanced certification.

Applicants pending the completion of educational or certification/licensure requirements may be referred and tentatively selected but may not be hired until all requirements are met.

Basic Requirements: United States Citizenship. Non-citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy. English Language Proficiency.

MSTs must be proficient in spoken and written English in accordance with chapter 3, section A, paragraph 3j, this part.

Experience and/or Education: (1) Experience: Six months of experience that demonstrates the applicant's ability to perform the work or provides an understanding of the work; or (2) Education: One year above high school that included at least 6 semester hours in health care related courses such as sterile processing, nursing assistant, hospital corpsman, and operating room and surgical technician courses or other courses related to the position; or (3) Experience/Education Combination: Equivalent combination of experience and education are qualifying for entry level for which both education and experience are acceptable.

Certification. None. Foreign Education. To be creditable, education completed outside the U.S.

must have been submitted to a private organization that specializes in the interpretation of foreign educational credentials and such education must have been deemed at least equivalent to that gained in conventional U.

S.

programs May qualify based on being covered by the Grandfathering Provision as described in the VA Qualification Standard for this occupation (only applicable to current VHA employees who are in this occupation and meet the criteria).

Grade Determinations: GS-07 (Advanced Level) Experience.

One year experience to the next lower grade level that equates to AT LEAST THREE YEARS OF EXPERIENCE AS A MEDICAL SUPPLY TECHNICIAN (STERILE PROCESSING), operating room or surgical technician or other position attaining the knowledge, skills and aptitudes of the position.

Demonstrated Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities. In addition to the experience above, the candidate must demonstrate the following KSAs: 1.

Detailed knowledge of complex surgical instruments used in operating rooms and clinic settings. 2. Ability to assemble specialty operating room and clinic instrument sets. 3.

In-depth knowledge of sterilization and cleaning equipment. 4. Ability to communicate both orally and in writing in order to convey information and thoughts to others.

Preferred additional skills and certifications: 1. Instructions from a formal Sterile Processing course with a minimum of 400 hours of hands on experience. 2.

Certification from Healthcare Sterile Processing Association (HSPA) or equivalent. 3. Basic Knowledge of Flexible Endoscopy References: VA HANDBOOK 5005, PART II, Appendix G47 dated July 8, 2015.

The full performance level of this vacancy is GS-07. The actual grade at which an applicant may be selected for this vacancy is GS-07.

Physical Requirements: This work is performed in various settings: decontamination, preparation, clean sterile supply (preparation) and in other services and departments throughout the medical facility/campus.

The incumbent may be required to work in areas that are hot, cold, drafty, and poorly lighted.

The employee is subject to the possibility of falls, scrapes, cuts, bruises, and other injuries from material handling equipment.

The work requires standing and walking during the entire workday and frequent bending and lifting of packages (occasionally weighing as much as 50 pounds).

The work requires dexterity and visual acuity for manipulating, disassembly and assembly of instrumentation. The employee is subject to burns from accidentally touching hot items.

The hazards of working around minute quantities of sterilizing gasses are unknown.

The employee often works around body fluids, mucous, excretions and bits of tissue, some of which may be foul smelling.

Strong, unpleasant odors are encountered while decontaminating bloody or grossly contaminated instrumentation or reusable medical equipment.

The work area is noisy due to the clatter of metal instruments, rumbling of carts and operation of pre-sterilizing equipment.

Patient Safety Competency Statement: The incumbent will be responsible for promoting a culture of safety and will fully cooperate in efforts to improve patient safety and eradicate potential events including the reporting of events resulting in actual or potential injury to a patient.

Incumbent must demonstrate knowledge of the reporting procedures involving safety issues relating to patients. Major Duties:

Total Rewards of a Allied Health Professional Duties include, but not limited to: Retrieve soil reusable medical equipment (RME) from operating rooms and outpatient surgical clinics to include Dental.

Remove soil, blood, tissue fragments, body fluids, and other containments by wiping, soaking, rinsing, brushing and scrubbing.

Achieve competency in all areas of sterile processing (Decontamination, Prep and Assembly, Operating room and Endoscopy). Inspect packages for indications of proper sterilization.

Assemble basic sets and trays used throughout the medical center including those used in the operating room. Prepare, load, and operate sterilizers such as steam, Sterrad.

Knowledgeable in high level disinfecting(HLD) scope reprocessor such as the Medivator and Trophon. Prepare operating room case carts daily pull sheets and utilizing surgery schedule.

Inventory instrument trays in Censitrac for accountability of all instruments. Monitor instrument sets through the sterilization process using CensiTrac and QAmonitors.

Disassembles the RME and determines the correct cleaning method, such as but not limited to ultrasonic cleaners, mechanical washers, cart washers and chemical cleaning/decontamination agents, as determined by manufacturer instructions.

Inspects, assembles and determines the correct method and packaging for sterilization such as but not limited to steam, STERRAD, Steam, and/or high level disinfecting scope reprocessors such as the Medivator.

Performs and documents daily and weekly QA operational checks and records documentation for all sterilization and HLD equipment and processes.

Assembles highly complex instrument sets including, but not limited to, open heart, major orthopedic total joint, cardiovascular, craniotomy and complex endoscopic instrumentation.

Processes all complex endoscopic instrumentation to include those medical devices used in the gastroenterology laboratory, bronchoscopy laboratory, urology and operating room.

Troubleshoots and analyzes mechanical failures and makes necessary adjustments to complex decontamination and sterilization equipment, as well as interprets alarm conditions which may occur while operating the equipment.

Informs management and healthcare staff when cleaning and processing standard operating procedures (SOPs) or instruction for use have been changed or updated to assure the changes have been validated to meet all guidelines.

Additional Duties As assigned.

At the GS7 level, MSTs are the most experienced technicians and provide guidance to less experienced staff members for more complex tasks that require direct supervision or oversight.

The employee works as team member with other Medical Supply Technicians of various experience to carry out the daily work utilizing the written standard operating procedures and/or manufactures written instructions.

Work Schedule: Monday - Friday, 10:30PM - 7:00AM with rotating weekends and holidays, Schedules may vary.
