The Department of Corrections is seeking a highly motivated and qualified individual for the critical role of on-call Advanced Care Practitioner (ARNP/PA-C) for the Washington Corrections Center (WCC) located in Shelton, WA.

Under the supervision of the Health Services Managers/Facility Medical Director, this position contributes to the agency's mission to improve public safety by delivering quality health care to the facility patient population in a timely and professional manner, promotes healthy lifestyles, and provides patient health care education. This includes assessing, diagnosing, and treating the multitude of medical issues encountered. This position monitors, manages, coordinates, delivers health care; counsels, consults, teaches, advises, and provides health care information to the incarcerated population improving quality and continuity health services.

Requirements

Provide direct patient care services:
  • Diagnose health related problems and determine outcome.
  • Ensure continuity of care. Deliver health care, defining time frames and pathways for delivery of services, and determining priorities and sequences of care to be Provided.

    Implement plan of care by providing direct patient care; directing others about the urgency, timeframes, and methods to deliver health care on and off site; determining when need for care or services become more urgent, need clarification, or another type or level of intervention; and taking action as necessary to 12rovide orders and accomplish prescribed interventions in a timely and clinically responsive manner.

    Analyze and evaluate the structure.

    process, and timeframes for service delivery; the expected effects of treatment or intervention; the outcomes to be achieved; revision of the plan of care to prevent complications; and intervene to address new or emerging Problems or to improve care and service delivery.

  • Perform minor surgical procedures and suture of simple lacerations.
  • Order and interpret appropriate diagnostic laboratory tests, ECGs, and x-rays.
  • Prescribe medications including controlled substances and buprenorphine as indicated.
  • Provide medical and technical assistance to other health care personnel as required.
  • Refer complicated and complex cases to staff physicians and outside medical consultants and facilities when necessary.
  • Admit and care for infirmary patients when needed.
  • Provide urgent and emergent medical care both in the infirmary and in living units or other facility areas.
  • When applicable manage a population of primary care Patient’s in general population or in an intensive management/ segregation unit.
  • Updates PULHES codes to reflect changes in the Patients’ condition or circumstances.

Complete Screenings/Physical Examinations:
  • Complete initial screening and perform initial physical examination.
  • Initiate PULHES coding and other health classification requirements

Provide effective communication and documentation:
  • Effectively communicate verbally in writing, and via computer or other electronic media with offenders. their families, other health care personnel custody, and other institutional personnel.
  • Legibly document subjective and objective clinical findings, as well as the actions taken to deliver all aspects of health care in the health record, computerized database and on other DOC approved forms/Computer systems. All documentation will be in accordance with the Health Care Guidelines.
  • Protect the confidentiality. of health records as mandated by law, professional standards, DOC policy directives, facility'. Operational Memoranda. and Health Care Unit Procedures. Treat any and all health records or health information as confidential and privileged.
  • Maintain accurate, legible, and complete records of patient care including chart documentation using appropriate format of all Patient requests for medical attention, objective data collected, treatment administered.

    and revising nursing care Plans and interdisciplinary treatment Plans, and complete other entries to support the problem oriented health care record.

  • Communicate and assist in the coordination of Pertinent information to health care Providers for Patient’s scheduled for off-site medical care.
  • Completed unusual incident resort’s as directed, collect data, investigate, and completed report’s necessary to the ongoing operations of Health Services and the institution.
  • Respond to verbal and written requests from incarcerated individuals and institution staff, as directed, with information or advice consistent with statutes and Procedures on health care record confidentiality.

Actively participate in the clinic/facility-wide Coordinated Quality Improvement Program (CQIP) projects and programs:
  • Attend facility CQIP/QMP meetings and report back to nursing and Support staff to keep nursing staff engaged in improving patient care at every level. on every shift. and at every bedside.
  • Serve as the lead for at least one local quality: improvement project per year and engage nursing staff in the Process at some level to ensure all employees have an awareness and understanding of the principles of quality improvement and the goals of the organization.
  • Participate/represent facility on state-wide quality: improvement initiatives; share the WCC processes and learn from other facilities: implement best practices in patient care.
  • Participate in Health Services Quality improvement activities.
  • Practice in accordance with DOC Policy and the Offender Health Plan.
  • Participate in formal clinical oversight according to facility and DOC Health Services Clinical Oversight Structure.

Delegate and assign patient responsibility through appropriate communication to the nurses and assistive nursing personnel:
  • Evaluate and consider the needs, condition, and stability of the Patient, potential harm, complexity of task, and predictability of outcome to determine appropriate assignment.
  • Teach, instruct, monitor, supervise, and evaluate the implementation of Patient care tasks. Collaborate with management for the implementation of processes that affect nursing staff, custody. non-custody staff, and other department’s/areas that impact patient care.

Consult with custody and other staff concerning health and safety of offenders:
  • Provide medical. health, and safety advice with regard to incarcerated individuals to custody staff when necessary.
  • Provide medical input to respond to routine and emergency grievances.
  • Responds to incarcerated individual kites.

Qualifications

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:
  • Certification as a Physician Assistant by the National Commission on Certification of Physician’s Assistants.
OR
  • Must possess a valid Washington State license to practice as a Registered Nurse, AND current certification from an approved national certification program (American Nurse Association) verifying completion of an advanced formal education program in the area of specialty, And possession of a current designation as an Advanced Registered Nurse Practitioner in the state of Washington.
AND
  • Must hold unrestricted license to practice as a midlevel practitioner and prescribe scheduled drugs.
  • Initial and continuous unblemished/unrestricted licensure in the state of Washington as a Registered Nurse and Advanced Registered Nurse Practitioner.
  • Unrestricted DEA license.
  • Initial and continuous unblemished/unrestricted certification by ANCC or AANP.
  • Certification by the American Heart Association in Basic Life Support.

PREFFERED QUALIFICATIONS:
  • Experience working as a mid-level health care provider at a correctional facility. One year of working experience as an
    ARNP or PA.
