GS-5 Specialized Experience: One year of specialized experience which includes (1) using office automation software; (2) retrieving, updating, and storing electronic data; AND (3) preparing, editing, and formatting correspondence, documents, and/or reports.
This definition of specialized experience is typical of work performed at the next lower grade/level position in the federal service (GS-04).
OR Education: Four years of education above the high school level obtained in an accredited business, secretarial or technical school, junior college, college or university.
OR Combination of Education and Experience: A combination of education and experience may be used to qualify for this position as long as the computed percentage of the requirements is at least 100%.
To compute the percentage of the requirements, divide your total months of experience by 12. Then divide your semester hours of education beyond two years (total semester hours minus 60) by 60.
Add the two percentages.
GS-6 Specialized Experience: One year of specialized experience which includes (1) using office automation software; (2) preparing, editing, and formatting correspondence, documents, and/or reports; AND (3) reviewing budgets and/or funding information.
This definition of specialized experience is typical of work performed at the next lower grade/level position in the federal service (GS-05 or above).
GS-7 Specialized Experience: One year of specialized experience which includes (1) using office automation software; (2) reviewing budgets and/or funding information; AND (3) preparing data summaries, charts and graphs to interpret and communication information.
This definition of specialized experience is typical of work performed at the next lower grade/level position in the federal service (GS-06 or above).
Some federal jobs allow you to substitute your education for the required experience in order to qualify.
For the GS-6 and GS-7, you must meet the qualification requirement using experience alone--no substitution of education for experience is permitted.
Time in Grade Requirement: Applicants who have held a General Schedule (GS) position within the last 52 weeks must have 52 weeks of Federal service at the next lower grade or equivalent (GS-4 for GS-5; GS-5 for GS-6, and GS-6 for GS-7).
