Full Job Description

Seattle Public Utilities’ (SPU) People, Culture, and Community Branch has a position opening for an Accounting Technician III within the Accounting Division.

Requirements

  • Provide customer service to employees at all levels of the organization regarding payroll-related inquiries and issues.
  • Review and audit timesheets on a biweekly basis to ensure hours are accurate and properly approved.
  • Perform preliminary payroll audits in coordination with Departmental Payroll Administrators (DPAs) prior to final payroll processing, utilizing payroll audit reports (e.g., DPA009, DPA010, DPA007).
  • Process benefits-related adjustments, deductions, and one-time payments, including overtime meal allowances and meal reimbursements in Workday.
  • Prepare and process consolidated deduction requests and other payroll adjustments as needed.
  • Ensure compliance with payroll processing guidelines, collective bargaining agreements, and SPU, City, Federal, and State rules and regulations.
  • Collaborate with SPU’s Employment and Acquisition Team, Labor Relations Coordinator, Benefits and Leave Coordination Team, Central Payroll, and Workday Support on payroll-related matters.
  • Work effectively in a fast-paced environment and demonstrate flexibility with shifting priorities and deadlines.

Qualifications

Experience: Three (3) years of accounting, payroll, or bookkeeping experience or one (1) year work experience as an Accounting Technician II (or a combination of education/experience/training which provides an equivalent background required to perform the work of the class).

Desired Qualifications:

  • Strong payroll processing background
  • Excellent communication, customer service, and organizational skills
  • Ability to work independently as well as part of a team
  • Experience researching and reconstructing employee payroll transactions
  • Demonstrated efficiency in Microsoft Excel, Work, 10 key calculator, mainframe computer payroll systems & internet navigation
  • Ability to interpret and communicate payroll related rules & regulations
  • Ability to work under pressure and meet short payroll processing deadlines
