Summary

This is a paid internship for college students in the Farm Credit Administration's finance team, where you'll get hands-on experience in basic accounting tasks like handling financial data and learning budget basics to support the agency's operations.

It's ideal for juniors or seniors majoring in accounting or finance who want real-world exposure in a government setting while finishing their degree.

You'll work in McLean, Virginia, either part-time during school or full-time in summers, building skills for a future accounting career.

Full Job Description

This position is in the Farm Credit Administration (FCA), Office of the Chief Financial Officer (OCFO), Finance Team.

The OCFO supports FCA's operation by providing financial management policy advice and reporting the agency's financial results.

The office oversees the agency's budget and accounting operations. This position is located in McLean, VA. This position is part of the FCA's Pathways Program and is a paid internship.

As a Pathways Student Trainee/Intern, you must meet and comply with PROGRAM REQUIREMENTS: Maintain your enrollment on at least a half-time basis at qualifying educational institution.

Half-time is typically 6 semester hours for undergraduate and 3 semester hours for graduate students but may be defined differently by your educational institution; Provide course registration information at the start of each school term and verification of academic status (transcript) at the end of each academic term; Meet and maintain the required GPA of at least a 2.95 or higher on a 4.0 scale, or equivalent; Sign a Pathways Internship agreement that sets forth the expectations for the internship upon entry on duty; Have the ability to work a full-time (40 hours/week) or part-time (a minimum of 20 hours/week) during your appointment while in school and have the ability to work a full-time work schedule (40 hours/week) during your summer break from school; and Failure to meet or maintain qualifications or program requirements or failure to provide required documentation will result in termination of your appointment.

You must meet STUDENT STATUS REQUIREMENTS to be eligible for this internship opportunity.

You must: Be enrolled as a student in an accredited 4-year college/university bachelor's or master's degree program on at least a half-time basis; Have substantially completed 3 academic years of progressive, higher-level education, i.e., be a current college junior or higher.

Three full academic years of undergraduate or graduate education is the number of credit hours determined by your college/university to represent three years of full-time study; Provide proof that you have completed your third academic year of higher-level education by submitting an official transcript at the end of your school's 2026 spring term Have and maintain a cumulative grade point average (GPA) of at least 2.95 on a 4 point scale.

If your school uses an alternate grading system, you must submit proof and explanation of the grading system with your application or you will not be considered for this position; Have a planned graduation date not earlier than August 2026 and no later than June 2027; and Be in good academic standing (e.g., not on academic probation).

If you graduate before August 2026 you are not eligible for this Pathways Internship unless you are pursuing further education and provide proof of enrollment or acceptance into a degree or certificate seeking program with your application.

In addition to meeting the Student Status and Educational Requirements you may qualify at the VH-32 (GS-05 equivalent) band level if you have completed 1) at least 2 full academic years of post-high school study leading to a bachelor's degree or 2) an associate's degree.

You must meet all eligibility and qualification requirements and submit all required supporting documentation by the closing date of this announcement. Major Duties:

As a Student Trainee (Accountant), you will be responsible for gaining hands-on experience performing accounting work that requires the application of accounting theories, concepts, principles, and standards to the internal financial management of the Farm Credit Administration (FCA).

Interns will: Gain knowledge of accounting principles and standards to recognize and measure revenues, automated accounting systems, internal controls, and general business practices to evaluate financial data and transactions.

Gain knowledge of budget principles and practices of budget administration and analysis; including preparing, justifying, reporting on, and executing the budget; and the relationships among program, budget, accounting, and reporting systems.

Learn effective verbal and written communication skills and practice active listening and reading comprehension; Expand their exposure to working professionally in a team environment; Learn time management skills and how to organize tasks to ensure timely and accurate completion of work products; and Learn to achieve task and assignment objectives within established deadlines and keep project leaders, supervisors and other personnel informed of progress and any impediments to timely completion of assigned activities.
