The anticipated start and end date is expected to begin June 15th and last through August 14th however there is some flexibility in dates for the students.


About the Internship:
The Forensic Laboratory Internship provides opportunities for students to see the daily job responsibilities of a forensic scientist. It is an opportunity for the students to put their knowledge, skills, and abilities into practice doing research or validating methods or equipment.

Requirements

Duties include learning the daily tasks associated with forensic laboratories such as:
  • Observation of scientific examination of evidence in routine and in non-routine casework.
  • Be able to stay focused over a prolonged period of time.
  • Work effectively in a solo and team environment.
  • Maintain confidentiality as it pertains to case submissions and the criminal justice process.
  • Performs DNA analysis method evaluations as directed.
  • Performs administrative tasks as directed by the Washington State Patrol.
  • Organize the personal workspace to minimize the likelihood of an accident, unsafe
    incidences, or the occurrence of DNA contamination.
  • Follow all relevant policies and procedures.
  • Records and organizes observations and data to create a record that explains their analytical
    work.
  • Effectively communicate ideas and convey information in writing.
  • Interprets and reaches scientific conclusions, supported by their data and observations.
Work Setting/ Hazards:
The setting is a forensic laboratory where chemical and biological hazards, drugs, firearms, and other hazards may be present.

Schedule:
Flexible work week during laboratory business hours Monday-Friday, 8:00 AM – 5:00 PM.

Travel Requirements:
Some travel may occur to observe testimony.

Tools and Equipment:
May be responsible for the operation of some scientific instruments/equipment utilized by the DNA unit, such as, but not limited to: Thermal Cyclers, Capillary Electrophoresis Genetic Analyzers, Real-Time PCR DNA Quantitation systems, EZ1/EZ2 Qiagen BioRobot, Phase Contrast Microscopes, and centrifuges.

Other:
Must be willing and able to observe casework involving traumatic events.

Qualifications

Required Qualifications:
  • Completed at least two years of college-level coursework towards a major in a natural science, forensic science, or
    closely related field, including genetics and molecular biology coursework. A copy of your unofficial transcript must be attached showing that you meet this requirement.
  • An attached essay detailing why you should be chosen for one of the Crime Laboratory internship positions. Your essay should be no more than two typewritten pages, double spaced in 12 point Times New Roman font with standard one-inch margins.

Conditions of Employment:
  • Successful completion of a pre-employment polygraph examination and background investigation.
  • Provide an oral DNA sample to be used in the CODIS Elimination Profile Index.
