Job Description

Summary

This is a paid remote internship at the Library of Congress for undergraduate or graduate students, or recent graduates from 2025, lasting 10 or 14 weeks in fall 2026 and focusing on hands-on learning and career growth in a library or legislative setting.

Participants will work full-time remotely during standard business hours and attend a mandatory orientation. It's ideal for U.S.

students or recent grads interested in public service, research, or cultural institutions who can commit to the schedule and meet citizenship and enrollment rules.

Full Job Description

The Library of Congress Internships (LOCI) program is a seasonal, 10- or 14-week paid internship program that enables undergraduate, graduate students, and recent graduates to gain experience through applied learning and professional development opportunities that advance the academic and career pursuits of participants.

Must be a U.S. citizen. Permanent residents are ineligible for consideration. MUST be a U.S.

Citizen currently enrolled at time of application in a degree-granting program of study at an accredited institution of higher learning (community college, college, university, or tribal college) at the undergraduate level or graduate level, AND/OR have graduated or will graduate between January 1, 2025 and December 31, 2025.

MUST BE AVAILABLE TO REPORT TO WORK REMOTELY FOR FULL FOURTEEN-WEEK PERIOD from September 8 through December 11, 2026. MUST be available to attend mandatory orientation on Tuesday, September 8, 2026.

NO EXCEPTIONS. Must be available to work a full-time schedule, Monday – Friday during the Library's core business hours: 6:30 am – 6:00 pm Eastern Standard Time.

Appointment/retention is subject to a favorable evaluation of a personnel security/suitability investigation.

Note: If selected, you must assist us to expedite processing of your application by responding quickly (within one week) to the Personnel Security Department.

Failure to submit the required legible documentation at the time of application will result in disqualification.

The position description number for this position is 404866. This is a non-supervisory, bargaining unit position.

The 2026 Fall session of the Library of Congress Internships Program include options for virtual, remote project work.

Interns hired under this announcement will be expected to conduct work from their home location.

This program offers undergraduate, graduate students and recent graduates insight into the environment and culture of the world's largest and most comprehensive repository of human knowledge.

Interns will be exposed to a broad spectrum of library work: copyright, preservation, reference, access standards, and information management.

Near the end of their appointments at the Library, the interns join together to present their accomplishments and share their insights on the impact of their work.

The assignments will span many professional fields at the Library, including information technology, human capital, event planning, communications, collections support and research.

Interns work with Library staff on mission-critical projects that utilize the interns' existing skills.

Interns are exposed to additional opportunities to expand their skills through special assignments, professional development training and workshops, mentoring, and other enrichment activities.

Interns participate in a wide range of projects offered across the Library of Congress that are designed to challenge and strengthen the skills of emerging professionals and fulfill the mission and vision of the Library of Congress.
