Sheet Metal Mechanic is a federal job series, identified by the code 3806. The work is centered on sheet metal: shaping new parts from it, fixing parts that are broken, altering parts so they suit a different need, and setting them in place where they are used. It applies to single parts, finished items, and full assemblies.
The series groups four kinds of work. Fabrication is building a piece out of sheet metal. Repair brings a damaged piece back to working order. Modification changes a piece that already exists. Installation puts the finished piece where it will be used.
Positions in this series are nonsupervisory: the job is the hands-on work itself, not directing other workers.
