About the Nuclear Regulatory Commission

The Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) is an independent federal agency, not part of a cabinet department. It regulates how nuclear materials are used in the United States, covering nuclear energy that generates electric power along with industrial, medical, and research uses. The agency's work is directed at protecting public health and safety and the environment.

Much of that work is regulatory. The agency licenses nuclear facilities and the organizations that handle nuclear material, and it inspects them to check that safety requirements are being met.

Hiring covers science, engineering, and technical occupations as well as administrative roles. Staff backgrounds vary in both education and experience, and include military service, private industry, and academia.
