What a federal physician does

The Physician Series, series code 0602, covers federal jobs whose duties are medical. A job in this series may involve doing the medical work itself, in one area of medicine or several. It may instead involve advising an agency on medical questions, running a medical program, or supervising other people who do medical work.

A job is placed in this series based on what its duties actually demand. It belongs here when the work can only be done by someone holding a Doctor of Medicine degree or a Doctor of Osteopathy degree. That degree is a basic requirement for the position.

Most jobs in the series also require an active license for practicing medicine and surgery. The license has to come from a state, a United States territory, or the District of Columbia.
