About the Bureau of Economic Analysis

The Bureau of Economic Analysis is a statistical agency within the U.S. Department of Commerce. It measures how the national economy performs and produces the figures that describe it, including gross domestic product, personal income, corporate profits, and trade in goods and services.

Those figures reach government officials, businesses, and households, who use them in their own decisions. The bureau measures and reports rather than setting policy, so its work runs on gathering source data, turning that data into national estimates, and documenting the methods behind the numbers.

Hiring centers on economists and statisticians who build and review the estimates. The bureau also employs information technology and data staff to run the systems behind them, along with accountants and administrative staff. Training in economics, statistics, mathematics, or accounting lines up closely with the work.
