About Air National Guard Units

Air National Guard Units sit within the Department of the Air Force. The National Guard is the oldest component of the United States Armed Forces, and its air units are organized by state, including the Alaska Air National Guard.

Most civilian jobs in these units are Title 32 excepted service positions, often called dual-status technician jobs. The work supports flying units and the aircraft they operate, and it includes skilled trades such as aircraft sheet metal mechanic. Each position is tied to a particular Guard unit.

These positions carry a membership requirement. The employee must be an active member of the Air National Guard unit involved, hold a compatible military assignment, and wear the military uniform. An applicant who is not already a member must be eligible to enlist or be appointed before taking the job. Accepting the position means accepting those terms as a condition of employment.
