What federal tools and parts attending work involves

Workers in the federal Tools and Parts Attending series, series code 6904, hand out tools and take them back in. They receive incoming tools, equipment, repair parts and shop supplies, store them, and issue them to the people who need them for a job. Items are signed out when they leave and checked in when they return.

The people who draw from the stock are maintenance, construction and shop workers. Machinists and carpenters are two examples, as are mechanics who work on cars and aircraft.

The job calls for knowing which tools, parts and equipment are in stock and where each one is kept. The worker also has to work out what someone is asking for and hand over the right item. These positions are nonsupervisory.
