The Department of the Air Force is one of the military departments within the Department of Defense. It is led by a civilian secretary and oversees two armed services, the United States Air Force and the United States Space Force. The Air Force handles military air operations and the Space Force handles military space operations.
Federal civilian employees work throughout the department along with uniformed members. Their jobs cover fields such as engineering, science, acquisition and contracting, logistics, aircraft and equipment maintenance, information technology, finance, and human resources.
These are federal civil service jobs, so pay, benefits and employment protections follow federal rules. Civilian positions are filled at individual Air Force installations.
