What a federal meteorologist does

The Meteorology Series, code 1340, covers professional work in meteorology, the science of the layer of air surrounding the earth and the processes that take place in it.

The work falls into a few kinds of tasks. One is research into atmospheric conditions and events, ranging from basic research to research aimed at practical use. Another is collecting weather measurements and then analyzing, evaluating and interpreting them to forecast weather and to determine the climate conditions of particular areas. A third is work on meteorological theory, either developing new theory or improving what already exists. A fourth is creating or improving the methods, techniques and instruments that meteorologists use.

Jobs in this series call for full professional knowledge of meteorology and the ability to apply its theory, methods and techniques to the work.
