About the Defense Commissary Agency

The Defense Commissary Agency, known as DeCA, is a Department of Defense agency that runs grocery stores on military installations. It operates 235 commissaries around the world, with annual sales of more than $4 billion. Commissaries sell food and household goods to service members, retirees and their families as a benefit tied to military service.

The agency employs more than 13,000 people. Most work in or near the stores, in jobs such as cashier, stocker, produce and meat department worker, store associate, and department or store manager. Running a retail chain also means hiring for the work behind the stores, including purchasing and contracting, logistics and distribution, accounting, information technology, human resources and marketing.

Because commissaries are located wherever military communities are based, positions exist both in the United States and overseas.
