Are you interested in gaining valuable work experience in the field of law enforcement? The San Mateo County Sheriff's Office is now accepting applications for the 2024 Sheriff's Summer Internship Program!

Are you interested in gaining valuable experience in the field of law enforcement and learning the basic principles of local government and public administration? The San Mateo County Sheriff's Office is now accepting applications for our 2026 Sheriff's Summer Internship Program!

The Summer Internship Program will run for 12 weeks from June 8 to August 28, 2026. Interns will work a maximum of 240 hours throughout the summer during the office’s standard business hours of Monday through Friday, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.

The Sheriff’s Office is searching for up to 15 Summer Interns to perform a variety of routine administrative, operational, and technical duties in support of the following divisions of our office:

  • Administration/Professional Standards Bureau
  • Community Engagement Unit/Sheriff’s Activities League
  • Corrections – Maple Street Correctional Center, Maguire Correctional Facility, Alternative Sentencing Bureau
  • Corrections – Jail Programs & Re-Entry Bureau
  • Criminal Records Bureau
  • Fiscal/Accounting Bureau
  • Forensic Laboratory – Front Office
  • Investigations – Crime & Intelligence Analysis Unit
  • Patrol – Millbrae Bureau
  • Property & Evidence Bureau
  • Technical Services Unit
  • Training Bureau

IMPORTANT NOTE: Candidates selected to fill these internship positions must submit to a thorough pre-employment background investigation prior to receiving a final offer of employment.


Requirements

  • Support assigned work unit in its daily operations
  • Answer telephones and interact with members of the public via the front desk
  • Complete scanning and filing projects
  • Collect, enter, analyze, and monitor data
  • Maintain office supply inventory
  • Prepare correspondence, reports, graphs, etc. for use by various law enforcement personnel
  • Proofread materials for accuracy, completeness, compliance with departmental policies, and correct English usage, including grammar, punctuation, and spelling

Qualifications

Minimum requirements to be considered for this opportunity:

  • Submission of a complete job application, including responses to the supplemental questions and a resume
  • 18 years of age or older at the time of application
  • Possession of a high school diploma or educational equivalent at the time of appointment
  • Eligibility to work in the United States
  • Strong preference will be given to applicants actively pursuing an education/career in law enforcement, criminal justice, forensic science, or related field
  • Successful completion of a thorough background investigation/criminal history check prior to employment
    • Interns assigned to roles in the Property Bureau, Correctional Facilities, or working with youth must also participate in a pre-placement medical exam.

  • Strong computer skills (Microsoft Office experience highly preferred)
  • Excellent organizational skills and keen attention to detail
  • Strong customer service and teamwork skills, including the ability to work with individuals from diverse backgrounds

Additional Information

The examination process will consist of an application screening (pass/fail) based on the candidate's application, resume, and responses to the supplemental questions.

Well-qualified candidates will then be contacted by the Sheriff's Office for an interview.

Applicants who meet the minimum qualifications are not guaranteed advancement through any subsequent phase of the examination.
